Rifugio Malga Cavallera is a stopping point for hikers walking the Alta Via No. 2 of the Dolomites – The Way of Legends. It can be reached via a simple variant of the classic route, along the section between the Pale di San Martino and the Vette Feltrine.
From the north (Rifugio Pradidali and Rifugio Treviso)
The refuge is only 40 minutes from Forcella d’Oltro and just a few minutes from the trail descending from Forcella delle Mughe.
After Rifugio Treviso, follow trail 718 to Forcella d’Oltro and descend on the southern side. At the junction just below the pass, take the trail to the left, heading east, which leads to Rifugio Malga Cavallera in about 40 minutes.
Alternatively, from Rifugio Treviso you can take trail 720 to Forcella delle Mughe: from the pass, in about 45 minutes you reach the foot of the trail on the southern side, where the Menegazzi bivouac is located; from there it is a further 5 minutes to Rifugio Malga Cavallera.
To rejoin the classic Alta Via route, descend to the Domadore area and from here, along an easy path, reach the locality of Padreterno and then the junction with trail 801, which climbs to Passo del Comedon. The walking time from Rifugio Malga Cavallera to the junction with trail 801 is about 2.15 hours.
From the south (rifugio Bruno Boz – passo del Comedon)
Descending along trail 801 from Passo del Comedon, at Malga Fratton follow the forest road for about 15 minutes until you reach a junction on a hairpin bend, where you must turn right towards the locality of Padreterno, located on the road that descends from Passo Cereda towards Mis–Sagron. Cross the road and take the forest road following the signs for Domadore – Rifugio Malga Cavallera, which can be reached in about 2.30 hours from Padreterno.
