Rifugio Malga Cavallera is a stopping point for hikers walking the Alta Via No. 2 of the Dolomites – The Way of Legends. It can be reached via a simple variant of the classic route, along the section between the Pale di San Martino and the Vette Feltrine.
From the north (rifugio Rosetta, rifugio Pradidali e rifugio Treviso)
The refuge is only 40 minutes from Forcella d’Oltro and just a few minutes from the trail descending from Forcella delle Mughe.
For people starting from the Rifugio Rosetta the shortest option is to make your way to Rifugio Treviso via trails 708 and 707, crossing Passo Canali, or to remain on the standard Alta Via route and continue toward Rifugio Pradidali.

To reach the rifugio Malga Cavallera from Rifugio Pradidali you have to descend into Val Canali via trail 709 and then go up to Forcella d’Oltro via trails 707–718; alternatively, you can continue along the classic Alta Via route to rifugio Treviso along trail 711.

From rifugio Treviso, follow trail 718 to reach Forcella d’Oltro and descend on the southern side. At the junction just below the pass, take the path on the left, heading east, which in about 40 minutes leads to rifugio Malga Cavallera.

Alternatively, from Rifugio Treviso you can take trail 720 to Forcella delle Mughe: from the pass, in about 45 minutes you reach the foot of the trail on the southern side, where the Menegazzi bivouac is located; from there it is a further 5 minutes to Rifugio Malga Cavallera.
To rejoin the classic Alta Via route, from rifugio Malga Cavallera you have to descend to the locality of Domadore and from there, along an easy path, you reach the locality of Padreterno, and then the junction with trail 801, which climbs to Passo del Comedon and leads to rifugio Boz; the hiking time from our rifugio to the junction with trail 801 is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Another option is to stop at Rifugio Cereda, which can be reached by taking trail 718 again. In this case, you add a short stage, but it allows you to enjoy the wonderful panorama of these mountains while walking through the meadows and forests of Passo Cereda and Malga Fossetta.
Those who instead choose our refuge as the final stop of their Alta Via, can reach the provincial road 347 in about an hour’s walk; from there they can continue to Agordo and Belluno, or to Fiera di Primiero and Feltre, by bus or taxi.
From the south (rifugio Bruno Boz – passo del Comedon)
After descending along trail 801 from Passo del Comedon, head towards Matiuz and from there continue along the municipal road towards the locality of Padreterno, which lies on the road that descends from Passo Cereda towards Mis-Sagron.
Padreterno can also be reached from Malga Fratton, still following trail 801, and then along the forest road for about 15 minutes, until you reach a junction at a hairpin bend where you need to turn right.
Upon reaching Padreterno, cross the road and take the forest road following the signs for Domadore – Malga Cavallera rifugio, which can be reached in about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Padreterno.
